Meierhoff receives 25-year recognition years ago

Customer service is an important component to the success of a retail business, especially in a small community.

Recently recognized for 25 years of service, Janie Meierhoff, manager of Marion Duckwall's, understands the importance of providing quality service.

"Janie has done a fantastic job of running the store," said Scott Orcutt, district manager of Duckwall-ALCO Stores, Inc.

Meierhoff was credited by Orcutt for "going the extra mile for customers."

"When a customer comes in and wants something that isn't available in the store, Janie will call and see if it's available," Orcutt said.

Meierhoff said it's easy providing good customer service.

"I truly enjoy my job and the customers," said Meierhoff. "I've got a good crew of employees who provide great customer service.

"We work together as a family. We're a very tight-knit group," added Meierhoff.

Meierhoff began working at Duckwall's part-time in December 1978, when Bill Holmes was manager.

In 1979, Meierhoff became a full-time employee, and then became manager of the store in 1991.

Due to Meierhoff's experience and ability, the Marion Duckwall's store is a training store for assistant managers.

In addition, Meierhoff has assisted with layouts of 25 new stores — traveling to various locations and assisting with the setup of merchandise.

"Janie isn't afraid to try new promotions and approaches to retail," Orcutt said. "Because of Janie's experience and willingness, we'll implement new programs in the Marion store before they're available at other stores."

There are 85 Duckwall stores in 10 states across the country.

Duckwall's was founded in 1901 in Abilene by A.L. Duckwall. It operated as a small variety or "dime" store.

Abilene continues to be the home office and distribution center for ALCO and Duckwall stores.

Marion Duckwall's was built in 1934, at the location where Case and Son Insurance and Hannaford Abstract and Title currently are located.

Fire destroyed the building in December 1968 and Duckwall's was rebuilt in its current location.

The building sustained damage in the 1970 tornado and again in 1991 when the roof collapsed, but has sustained to remain a major part of Marion's downtown district.

"The Marion store is always in A-1 shape," added Orcutt. "Janie has been a big contributor to Duckwall's growth."
