With the school year in full swing, Marion High School student council, known as STUCO, is already making plans for upcoming dances and events.

First priority will be the homecoming activities and dance, scheduled for Sept. 27.

Despite the important role STUCO plays in school activities, few parents and community members know the council exists. Comprised of members elected by the student populace, STUCO is made up of 20 committed, hard-working individuals seeking to improve school events and make classes more enjoyable.

Council representatives include four students from each class, freshmen through seniors. Four elected officers lead the group, including president Heidi Zogelman, vice president Megan O'Dell, and secretary Shawna Hett, all seniors. Junior Emmy Bowers acts as treasurer.

Zogelman and O'Dell have continued to dedicate their leadership abilities to STUCO, working together as the top two officers for the past two years. STUCO is, "students who want to make things happen," O'Dell said. Zogelman agrees that STUCO gets students involved, and tries to "better the high school by providing activities."

"After you've helped with a really successful dance or homecoming, it gives you a really good feeling. We don't get anything out of it but the self-satisfaction of knowing we put on a really successful event," O'Dell said.

President Zogelman has a positive outlook for this year's STUCO committee, noting the involvement of this year's freshmen is impressive.

Seniors representatives include Jamie Bernhardt, Brian Bina, Ashlee Moore, and Krista Vetter. Junior representatives are Amy Tajchman, Tyler Stubenhofer, Courtney Geis, and Caitlin O'Dell. Sophomores are Mindy Mastin, Briana Vogel, Eric Steiner, and Patrick Becker. Freshmen are Derek Vetter, Jenna Parli, Jessica Bernhardt, and Misty Richmond.
