Fireworks is not being sold legally anywhere in Marion County, according to County Clerk Carol Maggard. It is illegal to shoot fireworks anywhere in the county (outside city limits) except by special permit. Permits have been granted for Aulne, Marion Country Club, Peabody Gun Club, and several private residences. The county commission may cancel those permits if dry weather conditions are considered a hazard.
Greg and Mary Beth Bowers were pleasantly surprised Sunday when, as they left church, they found a horse and cart waiting to take them to Central Park. Family and friends were present at the park to have a picnic dinner with them in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary which is July 1.
About two dozen people showed up at the Marion City Commission meeting Tuesday afternoon to voice their opinion of brick streets. The 800 block of Denver Street was about to be resurfaced Monday morning when a flood of calls to the city building halted work.
The 77th annual Fourth of July celebration will be observed this weekend at Peabody. Sponsored by Peabody Chamber of Commerce, it will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday with games. The parade starts at 6 p.m. followed by a gigantic fireworks display at 9:45 p.m.
Residents at Hilltop Manor and manor staff enjoyed their evening meal Friday at Burns Café and Bakery. Residents attending were Ruby Linnens, Jane Makovec, Naomi Childs, Irene Kinsey Alvina Pagel, Ruth Davis, Bob and Sally Stack, Irene Busch, Linda Stenzel, Lola Hammer, Carl Hedstrom, and Ralph Schneider. Also attending were quilters LaVera Bernhardt and Kathryn Thole, David and Shirley Bowers, Shirley Carlson, and L.Dena and Cy Goertz.
