MEMORIES: 10 years ago

Members of more than 20 teams braved the heat and humidity at Saturday's Relay for Life and raised $20,665 for cancer research. For more than five hours, participants circled the track at Tabor College, Hillsboro.

The 1998 Leadership Marion County class spent July 8 learning more about the county. Class members are Lee Becker, Lincolnville; Darla Spencer, Florence; Carla Hajek, Tampa; Annette Voth, Peabody; Rollin Schmidt, Goessel; Kim Heiser and Jeanie Reiswig, Hillsboro; and Terri Bina, Matt Newhouse, Deana Olsen, Wendy Hett and Troy Walker of Marion.

The population of Marion County has decreased by 179 people during the past year, according to figures from the Kansas Division of Budget. The 1998 population is 12,898. This is down from a 1997 figure of 13,077.

Peabody civic leader Koni Jones is the new head of Marion County Economic Development Council. She was selected at their July 8 meeting.

The 11- and -12-year-old boys baseball team went undefeated to win the championship for their division. Team members are Nick Carlson, Tyler Richmond, Jake Smith, Chris Freeby, Josh Smith, Joe LaBelle, Kevin Waner, Tyler Smith, Jared Hett, Clayton Chamberland, Tyler Stubenhofer, Justin Brookens, and Dale Vogel. Gary Hett is the team's coach.

Marion Chamber of Commerce ambassadors presented a plaque to Dawn Herbel with Marion Seafood Shoppe at 329 E. Main Street. The business sells fresh-frozen seafood. Crab legs, lobster tails, shrimp and fish steaks and fillets are available. Other seafood can be special ordered. Customers receive free recipes and tips on seafood preparation.
