The Babe Ruth tournament in Marion this past weekend was a success, organizers said. The Cottonwood Valley League All-Stars, featuring players from throughout Marion County, won the championship and advance to the 13-year-old Babe Ruth Mid-Plains Regional Tournament at Lincoln, Neb.
A child in need of care case has been filed involving a Marion mother after she reportedly abandoned three of her children in Central Park on Friday. It is reported that the family had been evicted from their home in Marion and were living in a tent at Marion Reservoir.
The sixth Olsen cousins reunion of descendants of Nees Louis and Cora (Penland) Olsen was held July 19 at the Marion Senior Center.
Three students from this area who graduated from high school this spring will be attending Fort Hays State University on scholarships this fall. They include Dustin Delaney, a Marion High School graduate, and Fred Silhan and Luke Utting, both Centre High School graduates.
Marion County Fair opened Monday night with a 4-H horse show on the fair grounds at Hillsboro. Highlights of this year's fair are the parade, a demolition derby, and a two-night rodeo complete with wild cow riding.
With nearly 1,200 Girl Scouts on their way to the county lake, Marion County is preparing for one of its biggest events in recent memory. Bleachers and flagpoles were installed Monday afternoon. Portable toilets and dumpsters began arriving Monday. Two Army National Guard units will be on hand to provide mess tents and additional shower facilities. The units also will be providing extra water and a refrigeration truck. Busloads of girls will be arriving on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
