MEMORIES: 25 years ago

The county has received a $240,000 settlement for back taxes owed by the bankrupt Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Co. The deal was arranged with the railroad's board of trustees last December. Those cities which will receive a portion of the settlement money are: Marion, Ramona, Tampa, Lost Springs, Durham, Lincolnville, and Peabody.

Secretary of State Jack Brier will deliver the commencement address for graduating Marion High School seniors at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Marion Gym. Brier will be the featured speaker at the gathering which is the first to combine both baccalaureate and commencement programs into one. Forty-two seniors will be issued diplomas.

Meggan Silhan of rural Marion and Luke Utting of Tampa were at KAKE-TV studios in Wichita Sunday for the video taping of two Romper Room shows. Three remaining shows will be taped this Sunday. Meggan and Luke will be appearing on the shows aired the week of May 23.

School board president Randy Mills recently presented plaques to district employees recognizing them for years of faithful service. Those receiving the plaques included Earlene Hague, Frances Vinduska and Helen Reznicek, 15 years each; Gerald Kelsey, Wilma Waner, Eileen Hiebert and Susan Reid,, 10 years each. Robert Fredrickson, 10 years, was not present to receive his plaque.

Movie lights will burn again at Florence. Footage for the documentary on Fred Harvey will be shot at the Harvey House Museum in Florence. Five years ago the community also hosted the film crew making the "Mary White" movie of television.

Seniors Tim Jirak, son of Bob and Beverly Jirak, and Amy Hett, daughter of Bruce and Sandra Hett, all of Marion, were named Marion High School Athletes of the Year at the annual high school athletic banquet Thursday night at Marion Gym.

Jeff Conyers, who will be a senior at Marion High School this fall, has been selected by the Navy to participate in a special engineering and science seminar at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., this summer. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Conyers.
