The first test cutting of the 1983 wheat crop in Marion County is expected to begin sometime this weekend, barring any further rainstorms. Steve Tonn, agriculture extension agent, says the crop has a good potential, despite the high amount of rain the fields have absorbed through the spring.

City and county law enforcement agencies are warning residents that the use of fireworks in most areas of the county is prohibited. Only a couple of towns in the county still allow the sale and use of fireworks during the Independence Day holiday, but several cities make up for the loss by permitting controlled displays.

An independent movie production crew from Los Angeles is pictured catching the eye of one motorist at Third and Main Thursday during filming of "Hambone and Hilly," the story of a lost dog making its way cross-country. The film is expected to be released this fall.

Eight Marion Cub Scouts and their parents turned out under threatening skies Saturday evening for a pack cookout at Marion County Lake. The scouts entered a fishing derby to compete for trophies. Michel Soyez, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Soyez, took first in the biggest fish contest by hooking a six-inch perch. Shad Winter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Winter, caught two bluegill to win the trophy as the top fisherman of the day. The best cast of the day was behind the arm of Brett Sprowls, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Sprowls. He cast within three inches of the mark set.

Several runners from the Marion area participated in the Loop Around The Lake run at El Dorado Lake Saturday. Entered in the 2-mile run were Denice Bina, Ann Carr, Darin Helmer, Julie Kerbs, and Kenny Lundgren. Stephen Bryant ran in the 10-K event. Kerbs and Carr took second and third in their age bracket among women.
