MEMORIES: 35 years ago
Mike Ehrlich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Ehrlich, Marion, took championship honors with his "exotic-crossbred" steer at the Quality Beef Day in Marysville on Saturday Mike also took fourth in the Shorthorn class, fourth in the Polled Hereford Heifer class, and fifth in the Hereford Class. Dale Nuss, Marion, took seventh in his class of Angus cattle and Chris Jost won reserve champion honors with his Shorthorn.
Janet Rae Garrison and James A. Herzet were married at noon March 3 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Richard R. Garrison, Emporia, and the late Mr. Garrison. The groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Junior Herzet, Marion.
Greg Bowers, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Bowers of rural Marion, has been designated a distinguished military student by the Department of Military Science at Kansas State University. Cadet Bowers is currently battalion commander of the cadet battalion and holds the rank of cadet colonel.
Children at Wichita's McCollom Elementary School released 500 gas-filled colorful balloons at 3:20 Friday afternoon with notes attached. Mr. and Mrs. John Huna of the Pilsen community found one batch of the balloons at 10:45 Saturday in a ditch along the Cedar Street road while on their way to Marion to shop. The balloons were launched by two Wichita girls as a part of "operation no deposit, please return." The Hunas responded by mail, telling the girls where and when their balloons were discovered.
Hard rains pelted the area Sunday and resulted in some flash flooding along streams and draws. Some fields had dried enough earlier in the week to allow for a little working of the ground for the spring crops, but the latest moisture has postponed that work temporarily.
