MEMORIES: 35 years ago
Marion High School Principal Gordon Wakeman this week announced the honor graduates, valedictorian and salutatorian awards for the 1973 class. There are three valedictorians and one salutation this year. They are: Valedictorians — Edward Hett, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hett, rural Peabody; Louann Meirowsky, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Meirowsky, Florence; and Jo Marie Mueller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Mueller, rural Marion. The salutatorian is Randall Conyers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Conyers, Marion.
Marion Cadette Girl Scouts spent an enjoyable weekend in St. Louis, Mo., visiting tourist attractions. Those from Marion making the trip were Patrice Ewert, Brenda Keating, Lori Schmidtberger, Paula Vinduska, Donna Sherbert, Terri Enos, Molly Ferrell, Barbara Costello, Ginette Mellott, Michelle Mellott, Deana Forsyth, Lori Harris, Carol Regier, Suzy Higgins, Jeanne Koslowsky, Khrista Van Buren, LeFran McGranor, Cindy Harris, Adah McGranor, Diane Woerz, Ann Christensen, Sandy Bridges, Julie Zerger, Sherry Classen, and Carol Colburn.
Thomas E. Snyder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Snyder, Arkansas City, will graduate from the University of Kansas School of Medicine Sunday. He is the grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. J.W. DeMand of Lincolnville.
Greeley Gas Co. employees were presented awards at a recognition banquet May 9 at Herington. They included: Norman Ensz, Hillsboro, safe driving award for six years and an eight year service award; Orlin Fleming, Peabody, 18 years of service and 18 years as a safe driver; Will Helmer, Marion, six years of service and six years as a safe driver; Fern Frans, Marion, 10 years of service; and Joan Winter Marion, one year of service.
Cadet Jerome Doak, Shawnee Mission, senior at the University of Kansas, was named the top student in the Army ROTC unit there this week. Doak is the son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin G. Westerhaus. His wife is the former Kathy Westerhaus.
