MEMORIES: 35 years ago
The executive committee of Hospital District No. 1 Auxiliary voted unanimously last Wednesday to establish a health careers scholarship as a memorial to the late James A. Wheeler, M.D., who died May 26.
The James M. Loney family of rural Marion has been nominated by Marion Kiwanis Club for the "Family of Builders" award. Each club in the Kansas district of Kiwanis nominates a family each year for the award, which will be presented in August to the statewide winner.
Judge Albert B. Fletcher Jr. of Junction City and John M. Rugh, Abilene, were in Marion Wednesday to hear district court cases. The court has received final report of evaluation from Larned Psychiatric Center on Arthur L. Lewerenz, who has been serving a 120-day term for clinical study following trial in the murder of Susan Lewerenz last July. Lewerenz appeared before Judge Fletcher for sentencing Wednesday morning, but no report was available by press time for this week's Record.
When the school doors closed May 24, pupils at Junction City and Fort Riley elementary schools lost the services of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Haizlip, who retired that day. Between Alva and Ruby Haizlip they have over 60 years of teaching and administrative experience, a good share of it in the Marion and Marion County schools.
Janet Stika, future bride of Doug Marler, was guest of honor May 29 at a miscellaneous shower at the Marion City Building. Hostesses were Mrs. Valarion Stika, Mrs. Vernon Waner, Mrs. John Smolik, Mrs. Jerry Makovec and Mrs. Danny Navrat.
The county ambulances have been in service for a year. Since January the Marion ambulance unit has averaged 10.4 calls each month. Volunteers who have given effective service to Marion during these past 12 months are Jim Bridges, Alex Case Jr., Eugene Enos, Ray Ewing, Harvey Sanders, Ed Sandwell, Juanita Stovall, Gene Winkler, Jack Applegate, Jerry Harp, and Dave Thomas.
Neo-Century Club members were busy this week repainting playground equipment in Marion's Central Park as a PRIDE committee project.
