MEMORIES: 35 years ago
Rex Wilson, Marion High School's outstanding track coach and also top-notch math instructor, received national recognition recently when he attended the National High School Athletic Coaches Association meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyo. He was named "Track Coach of the Year" for District 5, which takes in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas as well as parts of some other states.
Dave Jackson of Dave's IGA presented this week's Vagabond Weekend winner, Mrs. Eugene Konecny of Lincolnville, with a certificate good at an Holiday Inn in the USA, Canada or Mexico.
Two girls from this area are among the eight contestants entered in the Junior Miss Pageant to be held August 1 at the Tri-County Fair at Herington. They are Bev Backhus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Backhus of Tampa, and Glenda Fike, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Fike, Ramona.
Five Marion High School students will spend the next month in Germany and tour Europe before returning home in August. Students making the trip are Denise Westerhaus, Pat Robinson, Martha Beaston, John Higgins and Diana Case. They will be accompanied by their German instructor at Marion High School, Mrs. Dwight Wiebe, her husband and three children. Each student will spend about two weeks with a German family, with each student assigned to a different family. They will then regroup for a tour of five European countries ending up in Paris before flying home August 8.
Leonard Jirak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Jirak of Tampa, has been appointed State Fisheries Biologist I at Webster Reservoir at Stockton. He is a graduate of Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia with a major in biology and also has received a masters degree in that field. The Jiraks have a week-old daughter, Jennifer.
