MEMORIES: 50 years ago
Marion City Clerk Hugh Gardner this week tendered his resignation to the city commission in order to accept a position in Wichita with the Doolittle Construction Company. His resignation from the city office will be effective June 1. The Gardner family have made many friends in Marion since coming here early in 1951, and will be missed when they move back to Wichita.
A major change in positions among personnel at the Marion postoffice, very pleasing to all concerned, is announced this week by notification from the Postmaster General in Washington. Postmaster Harold Keazer will take over rural carrier position on Route 4 and Assistant Postmaster Paul Shahan will move up into the position of postmaster.
"A Pageant of Spring to Honor the Queen" is the theme of the May Fete which will be presented by the Bown-Corby School at the high school gym Friday evening. The queen, Kristine Conyers, will reign from a rose in the center of a spring garden. Her attendants, who will be planted by the farmers and farmerettes, will represent the other flowers of the garden. The event ends with the winding of the May poles.
Mrs. Gene Heath is passing out "Heath" candy bars today in honor of the birth on Wednesday of her grandson. Mr. and Mrs. John P. Gibson of Manhattan, are the parents of a little boy who is yet unnamed.
Nine little friends came for the afternoon Tuesday to help Debra Ann Vogt celebrate her fifth birthday. Those present included Debra and her young sister, Christine Vogt, Judy Yaussi, Marilyn and Karen Janzen, Susan and Becky Wood, Donna Ewert and Barbara Johnson.
Elaine Klassen, Marion County's entry in the state elementary school spelling contest at Topeka last Saturday, did a good deal better than average in the competition. She outlasted 52 of the 84 contestants. She is an 8th grade student at Hillsboro.
