MEMORIES: 50 years ago
Heavy rains Friday night and Saturday sent many streams in Marion County to bankful conditions, and caused some anxiety. In places the smaller streams slopped over for a time, but no serious damage was done. A few spots reported hail.
A splendid new Gnadenau Mennonite Brethren Church, replacing the one completely destroyed by fire some time ago, officially opened last Sunday in Hillsboro.
Gene Hett celebrated his birthday Saturday by inviting in a number of his friends. Gene's mother, Mrs. Jerry Hett, served birthday cupcakes and other refreshments to Bryce Ollenberger, Steven May, Steven Johnson, Bennie Kelsey, Allen Pigorsch, Doug Schlehuber, Pamela, Debbie and Bennett Adams, and Terry Ray Stubby. Additional guests were Gene's grandmothers, Mrs. Art Hett and Mrs. Gene McCarty, and Mrs. Jack Adams and Mrs. Gilmore Stubby.
Sixty-five boys and girls, graduating from Marion County's rural elementary schools, will receive their diplomas this Friday evening, May 9, in graduation exercises to be held in the Marion City Auditorium. Prof. A.R. Ebel of Tabor College will be the speaker.
A birthday party honoring Helen Olsen was given by a group of her friends Tuesday after school at the home of Mary Melton. Those present included Mary Melton, Kay Amick, Deloris Davis, Sharon Nelson, Ruth Lais, Rose Marie Loveless, Betty Tipton, Cheryl Caselman, Jean Morse, and Anita Schlehuber.
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Weathers announce the engagement of their daughter, Helen Louise, to Mr. Marvin Bernhardt, son of Mrs. Lydia Bernhardt of Marion.
