MEMORIES: 50 years ago

Richard Lundgren, personable owner of the Elgin Hotel, has been hired by the City Commission to replace Hugh Gardner as city clerk. Lundgren went to work Wednesday and is at present learning the routine of the office duties from Mr. Gardner, whose resignation does not become effective until June 1.

Members of the senior class and sponsors left about midnight Sunday for Rockaway Beach in the Missouri Ozarks for a three day outing. Besides the 30 seniors, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Frickey, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Christensen, Miss Ruth Kohr, and Mrs. Jim Yeagley accompanied the group.

The big new generating unit for the Marion Municipal Electric Plant arrived last week and installation has begun. It is hope to be in operation by July 1.

Robert H. Meisinger, son of Henry J. Meisinger, Marion, completed recruit training May 2 at the Marine Corps Rescue Depot, San Diego, Calif. Upon completion of training new Marines are assigned to a unit for further infantry training, or to one of the many Marine Corps school.

Mary Christensen's ninth birthday was celebrated last Wednesday when a number of her friends went to her home west of town after school for a wiener roast. Those present included Barbara, Patsy, Jerry and Freddie Wilson, Helen Jackson, Janet Varenhorst, Carol Caselman, Jackie Evans, Jackie Thomas, Susan, Rebekah, Jane and Dorothy Lentz, Kris Conyers, Pattie Plenert, Valeria Baker, and Jeanie and Mary Christensen.
