MEMORIES: 50 years ago
Members of the freshman class at high school enjoyed a wiener roast Monday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Art Meierhoff east of town. Thad Meierhoff and Tuck Tucker went out early and had a big roaring fire going by the time the rest of the class arrived. Mr. and Mrs. Meierhoff and James Wilson, freshman sponsor, helped with the party. All enjoyed the singing around the fire following refreshments.
Members of Dawn Study Club observed their 60th anniversary May 15. An anniversary tea held in the social rooms of the Christian church, honored seven ladies who have been members from 20 to 53 years. Corsages were presented to Mrs. Helen Waterman, Mrs. J.B. Greer, Mrs. F.C. Utting, Mrs. Grant Meyer, Mrs. Edith Collett, Mrs. J.E. Good and Mrs. D.D. McIntosh .
Mouths watered and fishing appetites were whetted Monday when Fred Koch brought a 34-pound river cat (shovelhead) to the courthouse. The fish measured 42 inches in length and six inches between the eyes. It was caught on the Cottonwood River near Florence.
Mr. and Mrs. Gail Merrill entertained the teachers who live in their Merrill apartments at a dinner Thursday evening. Places were marked for Miss Marjorie Wamser, Miss Ruth Kohr, Miss Darlene Nelson, Miss Luella Cox, and Miss Wanda Thode.
James Broz and Richard Bredemeier of Navrat's 66 Service here last week received a welcome surprise in the form of a $50 award from a Phillips Petroleum Company "Mystery Motorist" for giving perfect driveway service. The award was made when the "Mystery Motorist" paid an unheralded visit to the Navrat Station recently.
Members of the 8th grade and sponsors, A.W. Haizlip and Jerry Dyck, visited Joyland in Wichita Tuesday as a "last of school" treat.
