MEMORIES: 50 years ago
High winds including a possible small twister, heavy rain and hail did extensive crop and farm damage Thursday night over an area about one mile wide and several miles long in Risley Township north and east of Hillsboro. The storm, hitting about 10:30 p.m., uprooted good sized trees, broke off branches, unroofed a building or two, flattened standing crops and caused residents to take to their storm cellars.
Keith Conyers, high school age son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Conyers, suffered bad burns on his hands, arms and face Monday while cleaning a motor with gasoline at the Riddle Quarries. He was down in the quarry pit when the accident happened.
Mrs. E.D. Longhofer asked guests for a party Thursday afternoon honoring her son, David's ninth birthday. Guests included Pat Costello, Mike Wood, Eddie Frickey, Bob Elling, Bobby Winchester, Chuck Bredemeier, Neil Colle, Neil Osgood, Jimmie Magee, Curtis Eckstrom, Donnie and Ronnie Sloup, John Sandwell and Darold and Jeff Longhofer.
Mr. and Mrs. Dean Batt and daughter Shelley have moved into their very attractive new home on Denver Street. The home is a modified French Provincial style and a fine addition to the beautiful north hill residential district.
Births announced in this issue include: Christine Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Bruner of Wichita, June 14; a boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Nowak of Salina, June 11; Teresa Lou, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Weems, Peabody, June 21; Jeannie Kay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald McCarty, June 23; and James William, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Steele, Florence.
Jean Morse asked guests for a slumber party Tuesday night honoring her houseguest, Sydney Hume of Stillwater, Okla. Those present other than the guest of honor were Mary Melton, Sharon Nelson, Anita Schlehuber, and Cheryl Caselman.
