The noisiest, most expensive July 4th explosion in this area was an early afternoon crash of two freight trains at the Rock Island-Santa Fe railroad crossing in downtown Marion. Thousands of dollars of damage was done to railroad equipment and car contents, and three Rock Island train crew men were injured when they jumped from the engine cab seconds before the crash.

The Class of 1928 of Marion High School held a reunion July 6 at the Marion City Building. Eighteen class members and one teacher were present along with wives or husbands, children, and other visitors. Some came from California, Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma.

A young man who is now a "guest" in the Marion County Jail is but 19 years old and has had no previous criminal record, but he is being held as a part of a quarter of a million dollar check passing ring.

Once again Marion is proud to be host to the state Babe Ruth championship tournament, starting on the diamond at the Marion Community Athletic Association field Friday evening, July 18. Marion was host to the state tourney last year, and the hospitality of the town was so well admired by all who attended that it was voted to return the tournament here this season as well.

The new Fairbanks Morse 1800 horsepower dual-fuel engine being installed at the Marion Municipal Power Plant is nearing completion fast, and crews have hopes of seeing it in full operation by August 1.
