MEMORIES: 60 years ago
The annual award assembly of the Marion High school was held last Thursday morning. The valedictorian award went to Miss Betty Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Williams. The bronze key of the Balfour Award went to Miss Virginia Geis. William Zeller was granted a merit scholarship to Phillips University, Enid, Okla. Seven seniors named to the National Honor Society were Anne Burkholder, Marilyn Hayen, Phyllis Larsen, Cherridah Mullikin, Williams, Geis, and Zeller.
Lovers of Spike Jones brand of music will be glad to know that he and his Music Depreciation Review will appear in the Emporia Civic Auditorium June 2. His full aggregation will give a 2 1/2-hour program of "musical madness" for which the company is famous.
Ralph E. Dohner was happily surprised by a party of 16 friends who came Thursday evening to help him celebrate his 16th birthday at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Dohner. Those there were Monty Frazier, Max Merrill, Don Fruechting, Jim Fruechting, Leslie Powell Jr., Lee Hett, Roger Hannaford, June Avery, Joyce Keazer, Elizabeth Ford, Donna Miesse, Nora Zeller, Patsy Hett, Kathryn Popp, and Dolores Razor.
Mrs. Edwin Burkholder was hostess at a formal dinner last Wednesday evening to compliment her daughter, Miss Anne Burkholder, who was among the graduates from the high school. Guests were Betty Williams, Donna Christensen, Patricia Harris, Loyette Hollar, Cherridah Mullikin, Georgia Christensen, Virginia Geis, Joe Bill Gound, J.D. Wright, Warren Hayen, Max Merrill, Kerns Allen, Bill Higgins, Ted Werts, and Timmy Burkholder.
James Blackim, superintendent of the Marion Municipal Light Plant, is leaving this Sunday for an extended visit to Ireland and Scotland — his first visit since coming to this country in 1911. He will sail June 2 on the S.S. America from New York and will visit friends and relatives until August.
