MEMORIES: 60 years ago

Pictured on the front page is a Mama Possum walking down a road at the Marion County Lake with 11 young ones clinging to her back by their claws and tails. The family was forced to flee their residence after rains flooded them out. The refugee opossum and her brood were photographed by Les and Beryl Broadstreet as they took off in search of a new home.

Jack Summerville has purchased the city delivery route operated for some time by Robert Ecker. The grocery and market delivery will be continued on the present schedule of two deliveries daily, Summerville said.

Mrs. Henry Reh has completed the sale of the Reh Oil Company, including the truck and building, to the Cardie Oil Company, Tampa. G.G. Mueller and son Norman are the operators. The new owners have operated the Cardie Oil Company out of Tampa for nearly 20 years so are well acquainted with the work and community.

Lois Strong was the honor guest at a party to celebrate her birthday last Thursday. The guest list included Janice Hayward, Janet Priddle, Carolyn Merrill, Carol Beth Miser, Joy Burnett, Alice May Parks, Rowena Olsen, Barbara McDaris, Nila Hoopes, Anita Kline, Eula Moon, Jeanette Webster, Patty DeWitt, Carol Jean Allen, Sammy Jewett, Leon Lais, John Waner, John Reed Williams, John Tuell, Bob Hiebert, Verlin Meier, Laurence Griggs, Gerald Richards, Joe Dvorak, Elsie Smith and Mrs. Merle Wall and Joyce, Florence.

The Marion mail messenger job, handled with fine efficiency for the past almost 12 years by Silas Weidenbener, is advertised this week for bids. Weidenbener is giving up the service effective August 1. The messenger service involves taking the mail to and from the trains and post office. There are two Santa Fe passenger trains, two regular Rock Island trains, and one Rocket with first class mail to meet daily.
