Merle Hawkins

Merle Esterlene Hawkins, 89, died June 22, 2003, at Anderson County Long-Term Care in Garnett.

She was born Nov. 11, 1913, at Elmdale, the daughter of the late Fred and Nettie Frances (Harder) Pracht.

She grew up in the Elk Community near Elmdale and attended schools at Elk, Elmdale, and Cottonwood Falls.

She married Richard E. Hawkins on Dec. 9, 1936, at Cottonwood Falls. He died Oct. 30, 1994.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Garnett; Earnest HDU; and Sunset Garden Club. She also enjoyed playing card games, was an excellent seamstress, and made doll clothing for children at Christmas. She also made quilts and afghans for her daughters and grandchildren, as well as other handiwork for family and friends.

Survivors include daughters Mary Dale (Mrs. Don) Setter, Olathe, and Joyce Ann (Mrs. Roger) Hastert, Garnett; a brother, Wayne Pracht of Westphalia; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held today, Wednesday, at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnet, with the Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Burial was in the Garnett Cemetery.
