MES students enjoy annual field day

About 345 students in grades K-6 at Marion Elementary School enjoyed their annual Field Day Thursday in Marion's Central Park.

This was the second straight year to hold the field day in the park, and the second year that it was schoolwide, i.e. with all students taking part in it at the same time rather than in separate sessions.

This is the first year for "health stations" at the field day. This year, there were four health stations and four physical activity/game stations, Susan Hall, a first-grade teacher, said.

Janice Waner, school nurse, and Charlotte Waner, physical education teacher, planned and coordinated the day's activities, MES principal Stan Ploutz said.

The health stations included lessons on drug safety and general safety, Hall said. Presenters included the Marion County Sheriff's Department, the Hillsboro Police Department, the Marion Fire/EMS department, and people from the Kansas Highway Patrol demonstrating crash consequences.

First-graders, just to name one group, were playing "hop with the ball," "pass the hoop," and "throw the ball," among other games and activities.
