MES students observe 9-11 anniversary years ago

Staff writer

Students in Ginger Becker's fourth-grade class at Marion Elementary School found several ways Thursday to observe the sad, solemn second anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.

Part of the memorialization of the day when more than 3,000 Americans were murdered by terrorists included writing letters to President George W. Bush and to men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces serving overseas.

The entire school observed a moment of silence for 9-11 in the morning. Students sang "The Star Spangled Banner" and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Students were encouraged to wear red, white, and blue clothing Thursday.

Students in Mrs. Becker's class also read a book, "The Star Spangled Banner," by Peter Spier, that explains for younger readers the meanings of words such as "ramparts" in the poem by Francis Scott Key.

The students also are studying the meaning of the concept of freedom.
