MES students participate in math campout

Fourth grade classes at Marion Elementary School participated Friday in a math campout.

The purpose of the activities was to prepare the students for the state math assessment tests. The tests will be given to students in the coming weeks.

The campout began at 3:30 p.m. and ended at 9 p.m. Various exercises to improve math skills were patterning, computation, grids with columns and rows, time tables, and tangrams.

At meal time, students were allotted a specific amount of play money to spend on the meal. Students had to decide what to eat for the money they had to spend.

After the meal, students participated in a probability magic show and exercises with fractions, and watched math videos.

"We couldn't have done with this without the support and assistance from the parents," said Laura Baldwin, fourth grade teacher. "Parent volunteers came during the day Friday to help set up and then came back later to help clean up."

Parents also donated food and assisted at meal time.

Teachers who helped were fourth-grade teachers Baldwin, Ginger Becker and Linda Allison, fifth-grade teachers Susie Best and Amanda Pfannenstiel, and Elaine Shannon, media specialist.
