MHS debate places second at MCAA tourney
Marion High School debaters Isaac Guetersloh and Lee Ownbey led the way Jan. 3 as the Warrior squad talked its way to a second-place finish in the Mid-Central Activities Association league meet in Hutchinson.
The team of Guetersloh and Ownbey chalked up wins against Wichita Collegiate and Nickerson, losing only to eventual champion Lyons. Four judges tabbed Guetersloh as top speaker in the rounds, while Ownbey also earned a 1 rating from one judge.
Christie Coleman and Clay Riggs teamed for a 1-2 record, topping Wichita Collegiate, while dropping rounds to teams from Nickerson and Lyons. Coleman earned 1 ratings from two judges.
"Several coaches said this is one of the most challenging leagues in the state, so we are proud of our debaters," said MHS head coach Mary Griffith.
Justin Herzet, Colton Olsen, and Chris Guetersloh served as alternates and timekeepers, and Tacy Taylor and Jake Cochran assisted with timing. Don Jolley, James Meier, and Adam Guetersloh served as judges.
