MHS debaters keep winning

In sickness and in health, Marion High School debate teams members just keep on winning in both novice and advanced tournaments.

Sophomores Eric Steiner and Adam Guetersloh recently posted a winning record at the Augusta Novice Tournament, according to MHS debate coach Mary Griffith.

The two medaled during the tourney. Only 10 out of 46 teams qualified for the award, Griffith said. Steiner was rated the number one speaker in two rounds, while Guetersloh was the second speaker in two rounds.

The team defeated Emporia, Hillsboro, Salina South and Newton.

"Eric and Adam did a super job," Griffith said. "These two young men have shown great improvement."

In fact, the two have improved so much they will begin competing in advanced tournaments, Griffith said.

During the advanced tourney, the team of junior Sarah Davidson and senior Amanda Steiner defeated Haven and Emporia. Sarah was ranked number one speaker in three rounds.

"The girls did very well considering they were both feeling sick," Griffith said. "They're real troopers. They were able to stick with it."

Davidson and A. Steiner also had a good showing winning a dual Dec. 3 with Hillsboro.

"We're waiting to see if they quality for state," Griffith said. "We'll see after the next couple of meets."

To compete in two-man state debate, teams must have won 50 percent of their rounds, and participated in at least four tournaments, the coach explained. State is scheduled for Jan. 24-25 at Blue Valley.

On Dec. 14, A. Steiner and Guetersloh were scheduled to compete at Moundrige. On Jan. 4, MHS squad members are scheduled to compete in an open at Remington.
