MHS debaters take 10th at Hutchinson years ago

Marion High School debaters Sarah Guetersloh and Kayla Williams took 10th Saturday in competition at Hutchinson High School.

Thirty-eight teams competed and the MHS squad missed medaling by two points. They defeated Moundridge, Lyons, and Salina South.

Williams was the #1 speaker in three rounds. Guetersloh was ranked #2 in two rounds.

Louis Holt and Levi Anderson had two wins and defeated Haven. Holt was the #2 speaker in three rounds.

Justin Herzet and Colton Olsen defeated Salina South and Pratt. Each were #1 speakers in a round.

"The squad did a great job!" said debate team leader Mary Griffith. "This was a difficult tournament with 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A schools present."

This year's topic is Resolved: "That the United States Federal Government should substantially increase its public health assistance to sub-Saharan Africa."

Debaters have studied with Tam Osgood of Kansas City and Dr. English of Baylor University.

In addition to these presenters, Emporia State University provided an informative workday and debaters traveled to the state fair to preview other teams' model debates.

Debaters have been working since July to perfect their cases.

"With a good start Saturday, we anticipate a successful season," Griffith said.

Debaters competed Tuesday at Wamego.
