MHS FCCLA participates in state showcase

Youth from the Marion High School chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) participated in the State STAR Events (Students Taking Action for Recognition) and State Leadership Showcase held March 31 and April 1 in Wichita.

Attendees participated in individual or team competitions, as well as workshops and sessions that challenged members to get informed, involved, and connected through the power of FCCLA.

The FCCLA State Leadership Showcase meeting was attended by 2,000 chapter members, advisers, and guests from throughout Kansas.

Marion High School FCCLA chapter adviser, Myrta Billings, and English teacher, Carolyn Moore, accompanied nine FCCLA members to the meeting. They included Kayla Barrett, Natasha Steinborn, Alexandra Vogel, Krystal Williams, Amy Waner, Virginia Helzer, Katherine Pike, LeNae Nelson, and Tiffany Conner.

The "Power to Connect" theme was reinforced by connecting members and chapters for their recognition in connecting with their families, careers, and communities over the past year.

Marion High School received recognition for the Membership Award "Piecing it Together." This award recognizes chapters that help piece together Kansas' goal of reaching 6,000 members by increasing chapter membership by five additional members over last year's membership total. Marion High School increased their membership from 10 members to 12.

Participating in STAR Events was Kayla Barrett, who competed in the Job Interview STAR Event and received the highest award, a three-star rating and a gold medal.

Members had the opportunity to listen to keynote speaker Keith Davis, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and former New York Giants player, who spoke about not letting adversity get in the way of reaching your dreams. Students also had the opportunity to connect by attending track sessions during the morning session.

FCCLA is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. Participation in state and national programs, as well as chapter activities, helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
