MHS forensics squad takes fourth
Squad finishes season with six first place finishes
Marion High School forensics team members took fourth place Saturday at State Champs held at Wichita East High School in Wichita.
"The kids missed third by seven points," said forensics coach Janet Killough.
The 3A tournament is the largest of the state's forensics tournaments, Killough said. There were 408 tournament entries.
Five Marion entries made it into semi-finals before advancing to finals.
"These kids had to perform three times," Killough explained. "The top 12 go into semi-finals then the top six go into finals."
Students receiving medals at State Champs were the following:
Duet acting — Trevor Jones and Michael Brookens, second; Joe Svitak and Megan Whitaker, sixth.
Solo humorous — Chelsea Arnhold, third; Tim Schuler, fifth.
Impromptu duet acting — Tim Schuler and Joe Svitak, third.
Other students attending State Champs were Michelle Miesse, Sarah Davidson, Derek Vetter, Briana Vogel, Elisa Gayle, Jordan Timm, Tyler Stubenhofer, and Rachel Davidson.
Three MHS students attended State Festival Saturday in Wichita.
During festival students perform in front of a judge who gives them a rating, Killough said.
State festival results were:
Nicole Nelson, I, solo serious; Lena O'Connor, II, poetry; and Rose Taylor, II, poetry.
"The kids were all so professional. They represented Marion with impeccable manners," Killough said. "I was very proud of them."
MHS students participated in nine tournaments throughout the season, not including state.
In those nine tournaments, the squad brought home six first place trophies, two second place awards, one third place win, and one fourth place win. The members brought home 169 medals during the season, Killough said.
"This was a very successful season," she noted.
Last year, the MHS squad took fifth in state. The previous year, students took fourth.
