MHS forensics team brings home first, second

The Marion High School forensics team just keeps on winning, bringing home first and second place trophies in the past two weeks.

The squad took first place Saturday at Wakefield, and placed second Feb. 8 at Council Grove.

Community members interested in seeing the students perform will have the opportunity during Forensics Night May 1 at Marion City Building. More information will be provided prior to the event.

Janet Killough, MHS forensics coach, also notes the students are available to present programs to organizations and clubs. Contact Killough at the high school to arrange a program.

At the Wakefield tournament, numerous students brought home medals. Several students also qualified for State Champs during the tournament. They were Megan Whitaker in prose; Nikki Moody, Sarah Davidson, Trevor Jones and Briana Vogel, all in poetry; Rachel Davidson in oration and extemporaneous speaking; and Sarah Davidson also qualified in informative speaking.

Following are Wakefield tournament results:

Solo humorous — Megan Whitaker, first; Patrick Becker, sixth.

Duet acting — Tim Schuler and Joe Svitak, first place.

Prose — Megan Whitaker, first place; Tim Schuler, third place; Trevor Jones, fifth place.

Poetry — Nikki Moody, first place; Sarah Davidson, second place; Trevor Jones and Briana Vogel, second place; Joe Svitak and Megan Helmstead; third.

Oration — Rachel Davidson, second place; Kathrin Lange, sixth place.

Informative — Sarah Davidson, second place; Megan Helmstead, third.

Extemporaneous — Rachel Davidson, first.

Council Grove tourney

Fifteen teams participated in the Council Grove Tournament with Marion taking second.

"We missed first place by only 12 points," Killough said.

Qualifying for State Champs in Council Grove were Megan Whitaker, solo humorous; Megan Helmstead, prose; Tim Schuler and Briana Vogel, impromptu duet.

Students who medaled include:

Solo serious — Megan Whitaker, second place; Tim Schuler, first place.

Duet acting — Renae Lundgren and Mike Brookens, sixth.

Prose — Megan Helmstead, second; Nikki Moody, fourth.

Poetry — Amanda Steiner, first; Ive Eddy, fifth; Renae Lundgren, sixth.

Impromptu duet — Tim Schuler and Briana Vogel, first place.

Oration — Megan Whitaker, fifth; Christine Swartz, fourth.

Informative speech — Stacey Bowman, fifth.
