MHS girls end tough week

Sports reporter

Marion High School girls' basketball team lost two games this past week, falling at home to Wichita Collegiate and at Ellinwood.

The Warriors may have played the best team in the Mid-Central Activities Association when they clashed with Collegiate Jan. 11, losing 81-27.

The Spartans had three players score at least 13 points, with Ashley Bell leading the way with 20.

Senior Sarah Williams led Marion with six points and three rebounds, while senior Molly Rhodes pulled down a team-high four rebounds.

The loss dropped the Warriors to 0-2 in the MCAA and 4-4 overall.

"We have got to cut down on our turnovers," head coach Daryl Enos said.

On Thursday the Warriors battled with MCAA foe Ellinwood.

Marion got off to a slow start, trailing 13-4, but senior Jill Hannaford's buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter cut the lead to seven, and energized the Warrior crowd.

Once again the Eagles came out hot in the second quarter, jumping out to a 21-6 lead. A three-pointer by junior Allie Maddox stopped the run, but Marion still trailed 25-12 at the half.

Maddox hit another three to open up the third quarter, and point guard Megan Hudson recorded three assists in the quarter, as the Warriors outscored the Eagles 13-9.

Trailing by nine heading into the fourth, senior Katie Zogelman hit a basket to cut the lead to seven.

It was as close as the Warriors would get.

Ellinwood went on a 7-2 run to open the lead to 13, and went on to defeat Marion, 50-39.

Junior Toni Gordon led Marion with 12 points and five rebounds, and senior Leann Thomas added eight points and five rebounds.

"Our transition wasn't very good," Enos said. "We were pretty dead — pretty dull."

Enos said they may try and slow down the game, eliminating the press the team usually goes with, this week during the Tojan Classic.

The loss was the third in a row for Marion, as they fell to 0-3 in the league and 4-5 overall.

Trojan Classic

The Warriors opened play Tuesday night in the Trojan Classic against Belleville, and play next at 6 p.m. Thursday against Wamego at the MHS gym.

The Warriors' final game of the tournament will be Saturday at MHS, with game time depending on the outcome of the first two games.

JV goes 1-1

The Marion High School girls' junior varsity squad lost to Collegiate, but picked up a victory at Ellinwood.

The defeat of the Eagles stopped a two-game losing streak for the Warriors, and improved their record to 7-2.
