MHS grad chosen for semi-pro team

Marion High School graduate Mike Williams has signed to play football with the Newton Stars.

The Stars are part of the newly formed semi-professional Midwestern States Football league.

The team will play its first game against the Wichita Storm this fall. The date and time are still to be determined.

Williams, a 6-2, 230-lb. running back, played football from 1995-96 for Grant Thierolf at MHS.

Young athletes showcase skills

Marion Country Club played host July 27 to the Junior Golf Tournament.

Fifteen young golfers participated in three different age brackets. The youngest group played nine holes, and the older two played the full 18.

Ties were broken by using a scorecard playoff.

11-and-under

First place - Scott Jones, Marion, 54.

Second place - Devin Dick, Hillsboro, 54.

Third place - Corbin Rother, Newton, 59.

12-13-year-olds

First place - Daniel Kunantaev, Hillsboro, 75.

Second place - Brian Fruechting, Marion, 95.

Third place - Jake Sorensen, Newton, 105.

15-16

First place - Travis Hett, Marion, 75.

Second place - Keith Jones, Marion, 96.

Third place - Jake Bredemeier, Marion, 97.
