MHS JV football: Second half spurs Hillsboro over Marion
The Marion High School junior varsity football team played host Monday to Hillsboro, battling the Trojans toe-to-toe for a half before eventually succumbing 24-8.
The junior Warriors got off to a fast start when freshman Cody Wildin stepped in front of a Hillsboro pass on the Trojans' first possession, giving Marion the ball at the Hillsboro 27.
Marion made the most of the opportunity, with quarterback Isaac Hett flipping a touchdown pass to tight end Eric Vogel for Marion's only score of the contest. Sheldon Boone ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion.
Hillsboro knotted the score 8-8 late in the first quarter, and threatened to take the lead right before halftime, driving to the Marion 5. But Vogel, Doug Schroeder, and Brian Fruechting led a spirited defensive surge that denied the Trojans a score.
Hillsboro held the Warrior offense in check in the second half, while scoring on both a long drive and a lightning-quick 81-yard pass play to account for the 24-8 final score.
"We saw some good things out there tonight," said Marion head coach Grant Thierolf. "I thought Nick Klenda punted the ball great tonight, and Adam Regnier got the ball up well on some good kickoff returns."
"We're still a year or two away," Thierolf reflected. "We've got to get a little tougher, and they have to realize that the harder they work now, the better it's going to be for them down the road."
Remington will host the Marion junior varsity Monday in the season finale for both squads. Game time is 7 p.m.
