MHS musicians in Masonic state band
Heidi Zogelman and Shawna Hett, students from Marion High School, were selected to participate with the annual Kansas Masonic All-State High School Marching Band at Pittsburg State University last week.
The daughters of Nick and Sharon Zogelman, Florence, and Eldon and Rhonda Hett, Marion, Heidi and Shawna attended a five-day band camp in Pittsburg with 225 other musicians from across Kansas. The camp ended with a parade in the morning and a pre-game and half-time performance on Saturday at the Kansas East-West Shrine Bowl football game.
Heidi and Shawna are among 3,000 young people who have performed in the Masonic all-state band since 1984. Advance Lodge #114, AF&AM sponsored Heidi. Centre Lodge #147 sponsored Shawna.
The band is a project of the Kansas Masonic Foundation. Sponsorship for each student is paid by local lodges. Any excess over the sponsor fee after expenses is donated to the Kansas Cancer Institute located at the K.U. Medical Center in Kansas city. Net proceeds from the East-West Shrine Bowl Game are donated to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
