MHS scholars take first at Centre
Marion High School varsity Scholars' Bowl team took first place Monday at Centre High School.
The team of junior Sarah Davidson, sophomore Trevor Jones, and freshmen Michael Brookens and Rachel Davidson advanced to semi-finals by taking first in pool play with a 4-1 record.
They defeated Northern Heights 100-45, Marion #2 130-20, Hillsboro #2 95-40, and Council Grove 50-40, and fell to Wakefield 30-70.
In the semifinal round, MHS defeated White City 50-15, then captured first place with a win over Goessel 60-30.
Sarah Davidson led the scoring with 230 points, followed by Jones with 135, Brookens with 80, and Rachel Davidson with 70.
"The team showed excellent balance and worked well together," Coach Doug Vogel said. "I think they should do well at both league and regionals this year."
The Cottonwood Valley League Quiz Bowl will be held Jan. 30 at Wichita Trinity. Regionals are scheduled for Feb. 6 at Minneapolis. The 3A state competition will be held Feb. 15 at Eureka.
