MHS seniors count minutes to end of high school

Time to start again. Most of them cannot wait. The end of high school . . . is it really only a few days away? How many hours? Minutes? Eager seniors could tell you in a heartbeat.

"Of course I'm ready to graduate," said senior Jamie Bernhardt, "but I'm a little scared and nervous."

But what does the world hold for the handful of seniors who are about to scatter in several directions at once?

"I'm going to Butler County Community College (BCCC) in El Dorado to get my associate in art," said senior Michael Yates. "Then I will possibly go to Washburn for two more years to get a teaching degree. Then I'll go a fifth year in a specialty college in Florida called 'Fullsail' and learn to program, design, and develop computer games."

"I've wanted to be a nurse since I was two years old," said senior Ashlee Pickering.

Some seniors are not half as prepared as Yates and Pickering. "I will most likely be attending BCCC to play softball," said senior Megan Moore. "I haven't known this for long because I have been waiting on the offers from several colleges for softball."

Even if you think you have everything planned and know exactly what you want to do, you never know where life will lead you.

"When I got out of high school I wanted to be a teacher or to go into advertising," said Gabrielle Longhofer who is now a social worker working with foster kids. "I had also planned to move back to Marion when I finished college. And we probably will move to Marion sooner or later." She was speaking for herself and her fiancé, Christopher Darrow.

Most students are almost positive they would rather sit on hot coals than to ever think about coming back to Marion. There are a few exceptions.

"I hope to stay close to home because I'm very close to my family, and I couldn't handle being far away," said senior Shawna Hett. "I may not end up in Marion, but I want to stay close. I will go wherever God leads me!"

For all incoming freshmen, here is some advice from the wise:

Megan Helmstead said, "Don't work too hard, there's no point in stressing. However, there's no point in spending five to six years at Marion High School either."

Carla Carlson recommends that you "Don't wait 'til the last minute to do your homework. Get stuff done early so you can relax and have more fun."

Most seniors agree with Bronson Shipman that "Freshmen should get involved as much as possible, be active in extra curricular activities."

Farewell, 2003 seniors. We will miss you as much as I know you will miss us. I hope the memories you made with us are not forgotten but stored in a special place in your heart.
