MHS students receive awards
Marion High School students were honored May 14 at an awards assembly at Marion City Building.
Members of MHS student council, Courtney Geis, Nikki Moody, Amy Tajchman, and Emmy Bowers presided over the assembly.
The VFW Voice of Democracy awards were presented. Misti Richmond received first place in the patriotic audio essay. She received a check for $100 and a certificate and advanced to the district level, where she received third. Rachel Davidson placed second and received a check for $75 and a certificate. Sarah Davidson was third, receiving a $50 check and certificate. Brian Bina and Hannah Eis were awarded certificates of participation.

Scholars' Bowl
Scholars' Bowl teams participated in nine varsity and two junior varsity and freshman/sophomore competitions during the school year. The team of Sarah Davidson, Trevor Jones, Rachel Davidson, Eric Steiner, and Adam Guetersloh took first place at the Northern Heights tournament.
The varsity team of Sarah Davidson, Trevor Jones, Michael Brookens, and Rachel Davidson captured first place at the Centre High School meet.
Two freshman/sophomore teams competed at the Olpe junior varsity meet. The team of Michael Brookens, Rachel Davidson, and Adrienne Chamberland took second place. The team of Trevor Jones, Eric Steiner, and Adam Guetersloh took third.
In the freshman/sophomore division at the Cottonwood Valley League meet the team of Steiner, Chamberland, and Lena O'Connor brought home third place medals.
Junior Sarah Davidson lettered for the third year. Sophomore Trevor Jones lettered for the second year. First year letter recipients are sophomore Eric Steiner and freshmen Michael Brookens and Rachel Davidson.
Other participants were Tyler Stubenhofer, Jared Kirkpatrick, Adam Guetersloh, Adrienne Chamberland, and Lena O'Connor.
Top scorer for junior varsity competition, with 320 points, was Eric Steiner. Top varsity scorer, with 1,620 points, was Sarah Davidson.
FCCLA
FCCLA officer awards were presented to president Krystal Williams and vice president LeNae Nelson.
"Power of One" is a national FCCLA program members choose to participate in. It is an individual activity created to reach a personal goal. Power of One consists of five units: a better you, family ties, working on working, take the lead, and speak out for FCCLA.
Natasha White received an award for completing "a better you" unit.
Those who received awards for completing all five units were Tiffany Conner, Amy Goering, Becky Hager, Virginia Helzer, Katherine Pike, Amber Smith, LeNae Nelson, and Amy Waner.
Those who received a one-star rating and bronze medal for chapter showcase manual at the district level were Natasha White, Wendy Hager, and LeNae Nelson.
Crystal Stradford received a two-star rating and silver medal for creed.
Kayla Barrett received a three-star rating and gold medal at district and state levels for job interview.
Students who earned top points and received pins were Tiffany Conner, Katherine Pike, Amber Smith, Amy Waner, and Becky Hager.
LeNae Nelson was awarded a FCCLA T-shirt for receiving the most points for the year.
CVL Business Skills
Lois Smith announced winners of the CVL business skills contest.

Yearbook
Certificates were presented to yearbook staff members, co-editors Jamie Bernhardt and Krystal Williams, Kayla Barrett, Kylie Hardey, Mindy Maag, Kendra Holub, Molly Rhodes, Jessica Bernhardt, Allison Maddox, and Randi McCarty.
James Davis, Renae Lundgren, and Natasha Steinborn were recognized for their assistance with yearbook photography throughout the year.
Math
Two students were recognized for their achievements at the CVL math contest.
Michael Yates was first in grade 12 word problems.
Sarah Davidson was first in grade 11 Algebra II simplification and grade 11 Algebra II equations and inequalities.
Matt Rhodes received the outstanding senior in mathematics and science award from Kansas State University. Rhodes also received the Kansas State College of Engineering Dean's Award.
Sarah Davidson was the recipient of the Bausch & Lomb Science Award.
Agriculture
Three students were recognized as retiring FFA officers. They were Tyler Miesse, president; Allison Wegerer, vice president; and Alan Vogel, secretary.
Allison Wegerer and Alan Vogel received Marion/Florence FFA Alumni scholarships.

Eric Steiner, Briana Vogel, Krista Vetter, and Derek Vetter were recognized for distinguished service to student council.
Forensics
Briana Vogel was named the first year up-and-coming outstanding forensics student.
Joe Svitak, Tim Schuler, Justin Brookens, and Megan Whitaker were named outstanding forensics students.
Ive Eddy received the creative writing award.
Joe Svitak was named the outstanding actor. Megan Whitaker was named outstanding actress.
Torey Hett was the up-and-coming rising star.
Scholarship contest

President's award for educational excellence is presented to those students who have at least a 3.5 GPA and score at the 85th percentile or above on a sub-area of the ACT. Those students were Kayla Barrett, Brian Bina, Mitch Enos, Megan Helmstead, Matt Rhodes, Joel Versch, and Heidi Zogelman.
Citizenship awards were presented to seniors Ashlee Moore and Brian Bina.
Brian Bina and Kayla Barrett were recognized as Kansas State Scholars.

Second-year pins were presented to Chelsea Arnhold, Kendra Holub, Stephanie Jacobson, Molly Rhodes, Amber Richmond, Alissa Vogel, Briana Vogel, Whitney Wear, Sarah Williams, Katie Zogelman, and Krista Zogelman.

Fourth-year bars were presented to Kayla Barrett, Brian Bina, Megan Moore, Megan O'Dell, Matt Rhodes, Joel Versch, Heidi Zogelman, and Shawna Hett.
Requirements for academic letters include achieving status on the high honor roll two out of three nine-week periods of the school year.
