MHS students selected for district music honor groups

Seven students from Marion High School have been chosen to participate Saturday as members of music honor ensembles, which will perform for the South Central Kansas Music Educators Association meeting at Wichita State University.

Students from high schools in the 11-county region auditioned in early November for inclusion in the SCKMEA honors mixed chorus, women's choir, band, and orchestra.

Lucy Collett, Jordan Timm, Luke Bowers, and Hank Collett were named to the mixed chorus, which will be conducted by Eph Ehly, professor emeritus at the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Tedra Eis was selected for the women's choir. The ensemble will be directed by Steve Perry, director of choral activities at Lee's Summit North High School, Lee's Summit, Mo.

The 1234A honor band, comprised of students from the four smaller high school classifications, includes Bryce Nelson, who earned third-chair status from among 10 trombonists selected. John Taylor, director of music education and instrumental music at Friends University, Wichita, will lead the 1234A band.

Jessica Vogel was chosen for the flute section of the district orchestra, earning second-chair honors. Norman-Armando Gamboa, director of orchestral activities at Washburn University, Topeka, is the orchestra conductor. Gamboa also serves as associate conductor of the Collegium Musicum Orchestra of the University of Chile, Santiago, Chile.

Choirs will perform in Wiedemann Recital Hall, with the women's choir performance at 4:30 p.m., followed by the mixed chorus at 5:30.

Instrumental performances will be held in Miller Concert Hall, Duerksen Fine Arts Center. The 1234A band will lead off the concerts at 4 p.m., followed by the 56A band at 5, and the orchestra at 6.
