MHS volleyball bows out at substate

The Marion High School volleyball team ended its season with a loss Saturday during regional volleyball competition in Lyons.

The Marion girls lost to Minneapolis 13-15, 9-15.

"Unfortunately, that's how it works in substate," said head Ginger Robert. "One loss and you're out."

Robert said she believed the pressure made it hard on the girls.

"I felt we played well, in fact, better than we have for the past few weeks," Robert said. "We had seen them play before and knew they'd be equal competition. It just turns out they had more than we did that day."

With the loss at substate, the MHS girls end their season 17-9 overall.

Tuesday, the squad ended its regular season with two losses at the hands of Council Grove on Parents' Night.

"We played well at times, but Council Grove is a 4-A school and they play a lot of big schools," Robert said. "We weren't mentally prepared."

Looking back on the season, Robert said she was very pleased with the way the team has progressed. During the 2001-02 school year, the team won 13 of its game.

"We have definitely improved each year," she said. "We'll be losing four seniors, but we have a number of juniors with varsity experience."

The coach said she was proud of the team's seniors — Krista Zogelman, Heidi Zogelman, Shawna Hett, and Ashlee Moore — for filling the leadership role.

"They were involved in a lot of the decision-making process this year and had a number of difficult roles to fill," Robert said. "They handed it well."
