MHS volleyball struggles in season opening tourney

It was a rough start to the 2007 Marion High School volleyball season.

The Warriors dropped all five matches they played Saturday in the Mid-Central Activities Association tournament.

The pre-season league tournament does not count toward league standings.

"It was a rough start for Marion volleyball," head coach Jim Versch said. "In each match the little things really hurts us."

Aspects of the game such as missed serves and lack of communication led to the amount of losses according to Versch.

The coach did say that the team took some positives away from the match.

"[We had] consistent play from Lauren Helmer and Lindsay Hett, great blocks from Kayley Heerey, and good defense from libero Emmali Kelsey," he said.

He also added Julia Zeiner contributed with some strong hits as well.

In pool play Marion was defeated by Hillsboro and Wichita-Collegiate before heading to the consolation bracket. There, MHS was defeated by Haven, Sterling, and Halstead.

The Warriors lost all but one match 2-0. They did defeat Sterling in the second game, 25-13.

"We won the first game and could or should have beat them," Versch said.

MHS C-team played in the Marion quad Tuesday, and the varsity will host the Marion triangular Sept. 4.
