Ministry looking for new location
Staff reporter
So, you're having a garage sale Saturday. You hope to sell everything but as we all know, that probably won't happen. What are you going to do with those clothes that didn't sell?
One suggestion is to donate them to The Shepherd's Shed, a free clothing storehouse at 708 N. Cedar, Marion.
For the past four years, Robin Dicks of Marion has spearheaded this project as her own Christian ministry.
With assistance from Marion Ministerial Alliance and volunteers, she has been able to maintain a clothing warehouse for those in need.
Open once a week for four hours, 2-6 p.m. Wednesdays, Dicks said many times people are waiting by the door for her to open.
"Every week I have someone new come in," she said.
In addition to free clothing, shoes, bedding, and some other household items, Dicks offers more than free clothing. She believes her calling is to serve people with not only clothing but Christian friendship.
"My job is to come here and visit with people," Dicks said. She has developed relationships with some and prays for all.
One major obstacle placed in front of Dicks and her ministry is the possibility of not having a building.
As long as The Shepherd's Shed has been open, property owners Brad and Patty Putter have allowed Dicks to operate the store from their building for free. Marion Ministerial Alliance pays the utilities. But now, the Putters have decided to sell the property.
"The easiest solution would be for the property to sell and me be allowed to stay," Dicks said. Otherwise, she is searching for another location.
Downtown would be all right, Dicks said, except she wants people to feel comfortable in coming here. Being located in a residential area seems to be less conspicuous.
If her prayers were to come true, the next building would be a little larger which would allow Dicks more room to sort items and for storage. Otherwise, she's perfectly content with the current arrangement.
Donations are always welcome but Dicks said she is particular about what she sets out for her clientele, who are from all around the county. She only wants the better clothing for her clientele.
A small box is set on a table for those who want to donate to help offset costs but Dicks is more interested in serving their needs.
Off-season clothing is stored and clothing for the current season is displayed.
Volunteers have stepped up to help. Dicks has had free lawn mowing service for the past two years. From time to time, she has volunteers who operate the shop for her on those days she is unable.
Dicks isn't sure what will happen in the future but she places it all in God's hands.
"I don't know which direction the Lord will take me," Dicks said, and she's leaving her options open for whatever direction she is led.
