Ministry offers help to county residents in need

Main Street Ministries, Inc., 415 S. Main, Hillsboro, serves the needs of people in Marion County, surrounding areas, and anyone in need.

That's the message director Lillian Bookless wants to convey.

The ministry brings hope and assistance to individuals and families experiencing difficult financial and spiritual times.

"Low-income housing is probably the main draw," said Bookless.

The only criteria for living at the home is for individuals to want to see a real change in their lives.

"Residents can't do drugs, smoke, or consume alcohol on the premises," explained Bookless. Safety measures are taken to assure safety for all who live there.

Primarily single mothers with children and families reside at the home. However, single people are not turned away.

"You don't have to be a Christian to stay here," said Bookless, "and we're not going to try to make you one. But the program is Christian-based. You would be amazed at the way God works here."

In addition to the reduced-rent housing, the ministry provides accountability for its tenants, life skills workshops, fellowship meals, discipleship groups for youth, and a safe, supportive environment for the tenants.

Since 1991, the facility has operated solely from donations. Families in Marion County and other areas have benefited from the services.

The building houses nine apartments — two four-bedroom apartments; three three-bedroom; two two-bedroom; and two one-bedroom are available.

A food bank is located on site with plans for a clothing center. Individuals and families in need of other items are encouraged to contact the ministries.

Donations of food, furniture, appliances, and money always are needed, said Bookless. Volunteers also are needed in order for the services and programs to grow.

Church groups, civic organizations, and other groups are encouraged to participate as volunteers or with donations.

Apartments are available for those in need.
