Misti Richmond finalist for $20,000 scholarship years ago
Marion Middle School student Misti Richmond is one of 10 eighth graders in the nation to be a finalist for a $20,000 scholarships through the Eddie Robinson Foundation.
Three of the students will receive scholarships of $5,000 per year for four years. They must maintain good grades in high school and attend college to receive the scholarships.
"A three in 10 chance at $20,000," mused Tod Gordon, MMS principal. "I would take those odds any day of the week."
Robinson, longtime coach at Grambling, established the foundation upon his retirement. It awards four high school scholarships and three eighth grade scholarships annually.
Finalists will be announced Tuesday. The other candidates include two students from Shaker Heights Middle School, Ohio, two from Grace Christian School, Anchorage, Alaska; two from Georgia, two from Louisiana, and one from Texas.
Gordon noted that all eighth graders were provided with scholarship applications, but only a few completed them.
"It's a good lesson on following up when an opportunity presents itself," he said.
