MMS boys fall

to Chase County

With a share of the CVJL title on the line, the Marion Middle School boys' basketball team struggled early, and ultimately fell Thursday to Chase County, 38-29, on the road.

Trailing 16-4 after the first period, the Wildcats found themselves trying to claw out of the early-game deficit the rest of the game.

In the second quarter, Chase County outscored Marion 13-9 to take a 16-point lead into the locker room at half-time.

Despite a solid second-half defensive performance, the Marion team couldn't work their way back into the game offensively.

In the third quarter, the Wildcats held Chase County to just four points, but only scored seven. Even after holding their opponent to five points in the final quarter, the Wildcats' nine points weren't enough to lift them over the final 11-point margin.

Calvin Jeffrey led the Marion team with 14 points, while Austin Hager added eight in the loss.

B-team

The Marion Middle School B-team remains undefeated in the CVJL defeating Chase County, 30-22, Thursday night. The Wildcats dominated Chase County in the second and third quarters to cruise to an eight-point win after a slow start in the first quarter.

Elliot Hett finished with 17 points to lead the Warriors, while Mitchell Leppke added 10.

C-team

In a limited two-quarter game, the Marion Middle School team defeated Chase County, 19-4. The game was limited to two quarters because Chase County was short eligible players. MMS worked extremely hard on the defensive end holding their opponent to just one point in the first quarter. Free throws accounted for half of Marion's scoring in the victory.

Mitchell Leppke and Elliot Hett each had four points in the win.
