MMS boys win preseason tournament

Marion Middle School Wildcats hosted a preseason tournament Saturday and won first place.

In the first game against White City, Marion ran the floor taking the win 47-30. After struggling in the first quarter, the boys got the fast break going and quickly pulled away. A solid defensive effort kept White City from getting many open looks at the basket.

High scorers were Austin Hager with 17 points, Calvin Jeffrey with 12, and Chase Carlson with 8.

In the championship round against Wichita Homeschoolers, neither team could find the range early in the game. However, the Wildcats prevailed defeating the Homeschoolers 36-34.

Calvin Jeffrey's three-pointer at the end of the first half gave Marion the lead. Marion stretched the lead in the third quarter but the opponent fought back to take a lead in the fourth. Key free throws by Chase Carlson with 12 seconds remaining helped secure the victory.

High scorers were Jeffrey with 16 points and Hager with 13.
