MMS eighth grader wins savings bond
A Marion Middle School student received a $200 savings bond from the NO-ADdiction Campaign for an essay she wrote during the last school year.
Eighth grader Allison Meador was selected out of 10,000 entries to receive a $200 savings bond. She was one of 40 students throughout the United States to receive a bond.
Meador wrote the essay in March when she was a seventh grader in instructor Deanna Thierolf's English class.
Students were assigned to write a short persuasive essay of 100 words or less telling why they have chosen not to smoke and how they would encourage a smoker to quit, Thierolf said.
Thierolf received a letter in November notifying her Meador had been selected.
"I thought the letter I was opening was junk mail and almost threw it away," Thierolf said.
Meador said she was proud to be one of the 40 selected to receive a savings bond.
Although she doesn't remember much about her essay, Meador remembers she used a lot of statistics.
Meador said she enjoys writing — especially poetry.
