MMS football thumps Collegiate

Marion Middle School eighth grade team celebrated parents' night Thursday with a 22-0 victory against Wichita Collegiate.

Isaac Hett set up Marion with good field position on the opening drive with a 28-yard kick return.

Running back Drew Maddox scored from one yard out on the drive, and Hett threw a two-point conversion to Eric Vogel, to give MMS an 8-0 lead.

Brian Fruechting, Colton Olson, and Vogel once again opened big holes for Wildcat running backs.

Nick Klenda carried 20 times for 95 yards, Maddox had 51 yards in 11 carries, and Hett rushed for 12 yards.

The defense stopped Collegiate all game. Vogel had two pass breaks, Sheldon Boone and Klenda both intercepted passes that led to Wildcat scores.

Dillon Wildin led all tacklers with 10 for the game. Vogel recorded eight, and Ash and Fruechting added six each.

The victory improved Marion's record to 5-1.

The seventh grade team fell to the Spartans, 30-6.

Les Riggs led the offense and defense with 34 yards on the ground, and 10 tackles.

Dillon Richmond rushed for 25 yards, and quarterback Matt Sprowls gained 22 yards on the ground.

Along with Riggs, Jordan Versch recorded seven tackles and Corey Seacat chipped in with six.

The Wildcats travel Thursday to take on the Hesston Swathers.

MES announces

October activities

Marion Elementary School will observe Fire Prevention Week this week.

MES students will have the opportunity to participate in a poster contest.

Posters must follow the theme, "Knowing What to Do" when there is a fire.

Winners will be announced Friday by representatives of Marion and Florence fire departments. There will be an assembly at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Kindergarten classes will visit Walter's Pumpkin Patch south of Burns from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26.

Kindergartners have been studying the life cycle of the pumpkin and each student will be able to take a pumpkin home with them.

Banning is second in school essay contest

Lindy Banning, a senior at Marion High School, won second place in the "It's How You Eat and Move Your Feet" essay contest co-sponsored by Kansas Action for Healthy Kids and Family Medicine East.

She was honored Saturday at a ceremony in Wichita and received a $75 gift certificate.

School concerts planned in October

Marion High School and Middle School will have fall music concerts this month.

MHS will conduct its concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Marion City Auditorium.

Jazz band, concert choir, and MHS Singers will be present.

MMS will have its concert featuring the band and choir at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 in the high school gym.
