MMS links parents, teachers through Internet

Marion Middle School parents and students now may access grades through the Internet.

K12Planet.com uses personal identification numbers to allow parents and students to see grades, attendance, homework assignments, and messages from teachers.

The system is in use at Marion High School with great success. Among high school students, about 50 percent of families use K12Planet.com, said Jim Versch, technology specialist and teacher.

"About 60 percent of the kids use it," he said. Students have separate PIN numbers so teachers and parents can e-mail each other in private if need be.

All teachers must include grades. At the high school, many also provide homework assignments, messages to parents or students, and other information.

Parents can get a brief overview of the program at www.k12planet.com. For more information or to receive a secure user name and password, call Versch at 620-382-2168, Mary Jane Grimmett at 382-6073, or e-mail Versch at verscjim@teen.k12.ks.us.

After families request a PIN, a self-starter packet will be prepared and left at the Marion Middle School office. Packets cannot be mailed, faxed, e-mailed, or sent homes with students. Special arrangements can be made if parents aren't able to pick up a packet during the school day.

Special tutoring can be arranged for parents needing additional help.
