MMS scholars' bowl team wins MCAA quad

Marion Middle School hosted Lindsborg, Lyons, and Collegiate Feb. 20 in a MCAA quad scholars' bowl, with MMS eighth graders claiming the meet championship.

In preliminary rounds, MMS eighth graders defeated Lyons, 120-20, Collegiate, 90-40, and Lindsborg, 90-60, before defeating Lyons again in the semi-finals, 90-20.

Marion played Collegiate in the best of three finals, winning the first, 80-45, losing the second, 70 — 55, and winning the third, 70-65.

Derek Stuchlik led Wildcat scorers with 235 points, followed by Landon Leiker, 130, Dane Purkeypile, 120, E.J. Obermeyer, 100, and Madison Chamberland with 10.

MMS seventh graders lost to Lyons, 50-60, and Collegiate, 40-90, but defeated Lindsborg, 90-50, in preliminary rounds.

The Wildcats matched up against Lindsborg again in the semi-finals, narrowly winning 60-50 to move to the finals.

In the best of three finals, MMS opened by defeating Collegiate, 90-15, but lost the second round, 40-80. The deciding match ended in a tie, and Collegiate answered the tie-breaker question to take first place.

The scoring leader for Marion was Kitty Collett with 240 points, followed by Drew Knolla, 140, Beth Nesser, 20, and Whitney Gordon and Annie Whitaker, with 10 each.

The Wildcats will compete March 8 at the Goessel Middle School Invitational.
