MMS Wildcats set up for championship game

Marion Middle School will host the Cottonwood Valley Junior League championship football game Thursday, as they take a record for four wins and no losses against Council Grove.

They set up the game with a 36 to zero thrashing Thursday of Wichita Independent.

This was the first game between the schools and coaches, so no one knew what to expect, said MMS head coach Steve Janzen. They only knew Independent ran a Wing-T offense and a variety of defenses.

Marion had a 14-point lead at halftime but dealt with penalties and fumbles on every possession. Things ran much more smoothly in the second half.

Travis Hett was the leading rusher with 17 carries for 110 yards. Jason Hett added 80 yards on eight carries, and Kyle Hett picked up 24 yards and his first score of the year on three carries.

Defensively, MMS benefited from interceptions by Austin Hager and Travis Hett. Hager also had one punt in the game, an impressive 46-yard boot.

Casey Baker was leading tackler with eight. Ben Leppke and Hager had six each, followed by Kyle Hett, five; Hank Collett, Jason Hett, Calvin Jeffrey, Travis Hett, and Luke Bowers, three each; Nic Waner, two; and Chris Brewer, one.
