Mueller will not run for re-election
Staff reporter
Eloise Mueller, mayor of Marion, announced Tuesday that she is not seeking re-election.
"I want people to know that I'm not running before the deadline," said Mueller. "I hope this will encourage someone else to step up and run for mayor."
Mueller, a one-term mayor, said she has appreciated the experience.
"I have enjoyed the insight, experience, and education," said Mueller, "and I sincerely appreciate the cooperation and support that I have received."
Mueller said she ran for mayor because she wanted to see Marion make some improvements.
"I wanted to see some things happen in town," said Mueller.
Mueller said the accomplishments made in the past three years are due to the other commissioners, Jim Crofoot, Larry McLain, and Bud Pierce, and the city staff.
Like her predecessor, Max Hayen, Mueller was instrumental in promoting and supporting the assisted living project. She also is proud of the Brooker Spring Project, and the planning of the water plant upgrades.
Other administrative accomplishments that Mueller, the commissioners, and city personnel implemented were efforts for efficiency of spending city funds, new highway signs, and implementation of ordinances for junk vehicles and dangerous dogs.
Mueller said that there is still much to be accomplished.
"I'd like to see downtown improvements made," said Mueller, "with a streetscape (improvement) project." She also is interested in business development, the development of a corporation for business expansion and new businesses, and beautification — especially the entrances into Marion.
"I encourage concerned citizens to get involved in the community," said Mueller, "including running for office."
Mueller plans to remain active in the community and is looking forward to spending more time traveling and in leisure activities.
